Crochet Along - Afghan Blanket - Square 1

If you would like to know what this Crochet Along is about, then please click on INTRO to read all about it  :)

Welcome to Square 1.

I am using Hayfield Bonus Aran yarn with a 4.5mm hook.  Gauge is not important, although all of the squares do need to be the same size.    Check they are square by folding your work into a triangle and seeing if the edges meet.  The pattern is written in UK crochet terms.

  • Chain 25, not too tight.

  • Now you are going to work into the 6th chain from your hook  (do not count the loop on your hook)  See where the pen shows the spot below.
  • Work a Treble into this stitch  (Yarn round hook, through the stitch, pull yarn back through  (3 loops on hook) yarn around, pull through two stitches (2 loops on hook) yarn around, pull through 2 stitches  (1 loop on hook)
  • Chain 2, then work another Treble into the SAME STITCH.  This is called a "V" stitch.
  • Now you are going to SKIP two stitches on the foundation chain and work into the 3rd, as shown by the pen.

  • Work a Treble into this stitch.

  • Chain 2 and work another Treble into the SAME stitch  (V Stitch)

  • Work all the way across your foundation chain, skipping two stitches then working a V stitch.  When you get to the end you will find you have one stitch left on your foundation chain.

  • Work a single Treble into this stitch.

  • You should have 7 x V stitches with a single treble at the beginning and end.

  • ROW TWO - Turn your work around ready to work the next row, then Chain 3.

  • For this row we will be working into the spaces left by the V stitches.  Make sure you do not work into the spaces inbetween the V stitches too, as this can sometimes happen in error.
  • See where the pen is below?  We will be working into that space.

  • Work a Treble, 2 chain and another Treble, all into this space.

  • Jump to the next chain space as shown by the pen.

  • And again work a Treble, 2 chain and a Treble into that space.

  • Before you go any further, just check that you are working into the space shown and not the one inbetween the stitches.

  • Work all the way across pausing when you have done the last V stitch.  Now, look where then pen is, it is in the beginning turning chain of the row below.

  • Make a single Treble in this stitch to give you a nice straight edge.

  • That's two rows done now, easy isn't it?

  • Work row 3 the same as row 2, again pausing at the last V stitch.

  • Again, you will be working into the turning chain of the row below, just where the pen shows.

  • Work a Treble into this stitch.

  • Just keep going now for 11 rows in total, you can count the V stitches up the middle to check your row count.

  • You need to make another 11 of these squares now, a total of 12 squares, all the same.
This is where your week one squares will be situated in the final make-up.

I will be back next week with Square 2 for you   :)
